New Review: Nike Air Zoom Generation

I know a lot of folks have been waiting for this, so without further ado, our Nike Air Zoom Generation (aka The LeBron) review is now online.

Take a look and let us know what you think here in the Klog. I'm especially interested in hearing what others who've tried the shoe think. Love, hate, lukewarm? Enquiring minds want to know!

Hey Prof K,
Great review of course, keep it up, love the sight and all that good stuff. I'm lovin that you got the first game version cuz in those pics the shoes are lookin beautiful. I was just wondering if the shoe is worth the retail price for ballin reasons, or if its a shoe to wait til it hits sales rack. I do have the GR version of the shoe just for chillin purposes. I only ball in ultraflights and i wish i would have waited for it to hit sales rack do i could have saved up for the limited edition colors including wheat(Damn ugly shoe though) and the all star(a bit of a let down). Anyway keep it up.

Ok just finished reading the review. Well i guess i wont be getting the azg afterall imo its ugly plus theres nothing special about it that another shoe hasnt already accomplished. Can't wait for the vc3 review. Is the vc3 next? lol i've been anticipating it since the T-Dot Special. If the vc3's get a good review im copping the black/silver and the white/red/black's.

JumpShot posted this at 11:57 PM - January 27, 2004

I have a pair of azg and balled in them once...it felt really light and my foot didn't overheat. it's a great shoe but i'm having second thoughts about wearing them again...it creases really badly and I like to keep my shoes looking new all the time. I guess I'll be going back to my VC I, it still looks very new after almost 2 years of balling. A friend of mine also has a pair of Air Zoom Gen, he's on the heavy side and after 2 hours of playing in the azg his feet are hurting like hell! I guess it's safe to say that the AZG is not for everybody.

'Trix posted this at 12:20 AM - January 28, 2004

I love vented shoes. Great review prof...but I don't feel like kickin over 200 bux for a mediocre colour (white/black/red) so i'll wait for the homes (and for them to probably go on sale). Ima try and cop the wheats or all stars but both seem unlikely where I am from....so whatever.

thanks again....i bet all of niketalk thanks you.

adi-Shrapnel posted this at 7:34 AM - January 28, 2004

Personally, I think that the colorway Prof. K wore & reviewed here is the best colorway of this shoe that I've seen. (Well, I haven't seen the All-Star colorway of it, yet...) The white/black colorway is the one my classmate has. Well, it looks great but I hope the outsole will last a long time for it kinda resembles the one-piece outsole of the Nike Air Jordan I. Prof. K, pls. review the adidas T-Mac III already, I've been waiting for it a long time ago already.

Those All Star colors come out early February so I need a review FAST. I keep gettin disappointed when I check, there's a new update, but it's not a T-Mac. That just means I have to wait another 2 weeks.

Barney:

The T-Mac 3.5's have been on T-Mac's feet for a couple of recent games. Its hard to explain what they look like, their higher cut than all his previous shoes, and they look kinda like the 2K3's. If you go to NikeTalk.com and click under the Nike forum, you can look through there for any info, that's where I found out about them. Personally, I think they look hott.

Also, does anyone know when the Huaraches (2K4) will drop, cause on NT it seems like there is a lot of a confusion going on. Any info would be appreciated

Fun Police posted this at 10:05 AM - January 28, 2004

Hey Prof K,

I own a pair of the AZG and absolutely love the shoes. However, I do have one complaint about them, and am wondering if you experienced anything similar. I wear ankle socks when I ball and found that for the first 3 times I wore the AZG's the inner edge around the ankle actually dug into my skin causing them to bleed. In my second wearing of the shoe they actually caused me to bleed all over the shoe having me to apply a blood remover and etc... Therefore, now I have a pinkish red area in the inner lining of my shoe. Did you experience anything similar?

Also on a side note, I was convinced by your NB BB885 reviews to actually consider purchasing them. Do you feel that the BB885 is actually better than the AZG?

I was hoping someone could provide some insight on a shoe I'm looking at, and I can't seem to find out too much about it. I am going to be having reconstructive surgery on my right ankle in a month and I'm looking at coping the adidas Forum Supreme Mids (black) to ball in after I'm back on my feet. (pun intended.) They look like they have good ankle support, and have some technological updates from the original Forums. (Torsion, adiprene +, achilles notch, etc.) I've always loved these shoes, and now have a justifyable reason to buy them. I'm a 6'3" 240 pounder that plays 1-3 on the court. Sho weight isn't a concern for me, support definitely is though. (Both tangible and psychological.) I played in some Shox Stunners and Signature Players over the summer, and I didn't have a lot of confidence from a support standpoint from those shoes. Anyone have any feedback on the Forum Supremes, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

GREAT REVIEW ON THE SHOE, BUT IT IS THE MOST HIDEOUS LOOKING THING...YOU COULD NOT GIVE ME A PAIR OF THE TRUCKS! JUST PLAIN UGLY! I CANNOT BELIEVE A SHOE AS NASTY AS THIS COULD CREATE SUCH A BUZZ! NIKE SHOULD NOT TRY TO EMULATE AND PROMOTE AN 18 YEAR OLD AND HIS UGLY SHOE INTO SOME THING HE IS NOT AND WILL NEVER BE....AND THAT IS #23......THERE WILL NEVER BE A LEGACY OF KICKS LIKE THAT AGAIN!!!

Prof. K posted this at 2:48 PM - January 28, 2004

Hey Fun Police, I'm really surprised to hear about your problem with the AZGs. When you say ankle socks, do you mean socks that were cut below the top of the shoe? I always test with socks that run above the top of whatever shoe I'm testing, so that could explain why I didn't have a problem with chafing along the top of the AZG's ankle. If your socks did run above the top of the AZG I'd be really mystified.

Also, re: the BB885, it's a close call, but personally, after having played in both, I would buy the 885 over the AZG.

And on the T-MAC III, my bad on taking so long to get that out guys. I'm kind of torn on whether I should drop that next or a review of the VC III (which I am very excited to write up). Then I also still have to get to the AND 1 Rise and Chosen One. And I need to sleep every so often too. ;-)

Mark posted this at 3:08 PM - January 28, 2004

VC III or TMAC III? VC III! VC III! VC III! im getting exited again LOL. i own tmac3's their really good but i've experienced some problems with them.

at first u feel the springy feeling of the tmac3 cushioning but it wears out pretty quick. when i play i get alot of pain probably cuz im a little wider in feet size because it feels like its designed for narrow feet and the side where their is the stripes is where the side of my foot feels like its passing the sockliner and really bothers me after awhile of play. I got bruising on the big thumb toe on my left foot after my first few wearings. I experienced heel slip so i tightend the shoe's lacing really tight but it added discomfort to my foot so i loosned it. it felt more comfortable but the heel slip came back. lol at first i loved the tmac3's but now im not so sure.

anyone else experience problems with it?
------

and im exited for the vc3 cuz it looks like its going to be a crazy shoe.

Nice Review Prof! Well this review definitely makes me think twice about brons new shoe. To all these people wondering about the VC3's. They are pretty damn nice! I tried some on in Finish Line the other day and I was mystified by them. So much support, cushioning, traction. It was like a dream. But then I checked out the price tag... My dream then became a nightmare. 160 dollars for a pair of shoes?!?!? I quickly packaged them back in the box and told the dude I'll "think" about it. ;-)

But hey it's the profs choice. they just look like a shoe that would reach a new level of support IMO.

Prof' I like how you mentioned the flat footbed, cuz i hav pretty flat feet and most shoes with big arches make me really sore (esp. adidas). Like i bought the ultraflights and loved the zoom feel but i could barely walk afterwards. It's really annoying cuz you can barely feel anything in the store but when i play i'm hobbling all over the place. can you start specifically posting a footbed or last rating of some sort, because every shoe's footbed is different and that has a huge impact on fit. knowing in advance if a shoe had a high, mid or low arch and any quirky bumps too would be great. thanks so much, i just got my Ko shirt for xmas and i love it.

But really, the T-Mac III's out longer than the VC III, there's more colors released, and there are All Star and LE colors soon to be released.

Which means: Some people are still not sure about the T-Mac III's quality (I have it, its a great shoe, I heard great stuff about it, but I'm concerned about durability and it's always nice to have an 101% reliable review on it, and this site is the place for 101% reliability).

They will want to know if they will want to buy it or not (or in my case, buy another one or not), and since the Limited colorways are coming up, decisions must be made FAST before they sell out while people are still deciding.

However VC III's were just coming on the shelves and they're only released in 1 colorway. Also, I don't see a lot of people buying it. VC III can wait.

Jmy posted this at 11:51 PM - January 28, 2004

FOR ALL THOSE INQUIRING ABOUT VC3, HUARACHE 2K4 AND TMAC3
I have all three shoes and i would rank them in terms of performance: Huarache > Tmac3 > VC3

Huarache has great cushioning ( zoom air all the way, augmented with special huarache sockliner with perfs), great fit (inner bootie+ ankle strap = locked down fit), and overall a solid shoe (herringbone outsole with flex grooves, heel counter, carbon spring plate etc). It felt really natural on my foot, and it's light weight probably ocntributed to that.

Tmac3 is consistent with its predecessors in almost all departments, good cushioning, good fit, and good stability...and there isn't really anything that stands out about this shoe in terms of technology, it's just a good, solid shoe to ball in.

You might wonder why i ranked the most expensive of the three shoes last...see, i haven't broken into my VC3s yet so this opinion might only be temporary. Don't get me wrong this shoe was SOLID. it was very well built and felt like it could last a while ( kinda like that first a3 shoe that Prof reviewed). The thickly padded ankle area along with the heel counter and anti-inversion panels provided great fit and ankle protection. Unfortunately that's basically where the positive perks end for me. I thought the cushioning was pretty rock hard ( i'm about 6'1'' but only about 145 lbs) and i could never get a good forefoot fit (i tried thick padded socks, but my foot started to bake after a while). Overall the shoe felt kinda clunky...

SIDENOTE - In Wednesday's game against Philly, Carter started wearing the VC2s again (and he played well. Raps won 94 - 84) ...not good news for nike.

Boy Wonder posted this at 12:15 AM - January 29, 2004

What's up with the people on NikeTalk saying that Vinsanity wears the VC II's cause hes got some ankle irritation that messes up his game when he wears the VC III since it supposedly has such wonderful ankle support/protection and the VC II is more low cut? Is there any actual confirmation to this[I am not a member of NikeTalk...I just read it]?

Hey Vancity Baller, stick with them for a couple of games. The Phylon midsole needs to take some impacts before it starts to "give" under your weight. Trust me -- two to three games (or hard practices) and you'll be solid for a good long while.

I have a pair of Black VC III's and they are one of the BEST shoes that i have ever worn. Almost everything about this shoe is great, except that the patented shiny thingi (watever u call it) on the sides do get scuffed up and it gets kinda annoying... But Performance-wise, the VC III has GREAT cushioning, and a really good fit, and these shoes are WAY better than the T MAC 3's.

The Scout posted this at 7:02 AM - January 29, 2004

Prof K, maybe it's just me, but I thought the forefoot in the AZGs was wider than the norm--which makes me think that if the shoe was designed on LBJs foot, dude has duck feet. Of course, the way he plays, he could have skateblade-wide feet for all anyone cares. I also thought the shoe could have been higher cut--it seems like too much of a 'tweener heightwise. Basically, I think I'll stick with 2K3s for awhile--it's much more distinct in it's cut, and a much more original design.

balltill_I_fall posted this at 7:41 AM - January 29, 2004

Try playing the vc outdoor, see how long will it last... i dare all u vc owners cum tmac haters.

yea. i think AZG looks kinda dope. It has an old school look but a new school feelin and i kinda love it. However it creases big time, n the upper feels very ermm...soft. Hope the guys at Nike will do somethin abt it in the next ZG. Btw, i think the t-macs are very overhyped, so much so that it begins to irritate me alot. However, i think VC3 is realli abit too expensive although i don't really hate it.

OnionSkin posted this at 12:33 PM - January 29, 2004

the only reason anyone would buy those shoes is because they are a certain persons pro model ... why else ?

im down for the t mac 3s or the vc 3s ... depends who wins !

Sean posted this at 4:49 PM - January 29, 2004

Ha ha ha, good luck, Jamalanderson23. The First Games were sold in EXTREMELY limited quantities for ONE day only.

So the prices of them have undoubtedly skyrocketed. Look on ebay, heh.

I was wondering if you knew what to do to stop the shoe from creasing? Should i stuff the shoe with paper towels? I really need to know because i love my shoes haha but after wearing the shoe, they crease. Can you please help me? anyone else with tips please feel free to help. thanks in advance PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of my friends own t mac 3's. They say the springy feeling wares out pretty fast. I dont hate TMAC's, but i'm just saying performance-wise, the VC III is a better choice.

And for the haters, toyota loses money on the prius ........but win customers with uniqueness .......

I just bought AJ 18.5 (white/ black) over Shox VC 3 (black/ black), the shoe looks cool and so comfortable. The other reason is that I am waiting for other colorway of VC 3 as I have owned black VC 2.
I also own AJ XVII+ which I consider as the best overall bball shoe.
In fact, I like most of Nike's signature shoes as they are built with some techs.

I also like Adidas, but not so sure with its durability (I own black Kobe 1). I would like to consider buying TMAC (IMO TMAC 2 looks better than TMAC 3) but I will wait for K's review.

I don't really like Reebok, the only one I had was Answer 3.

C15A posted this at 1:23 AM - January 30, 2004

IMO VC 3 perfoms better than VC 2. The shox in VC 3 is more like Shox TL which is very very comfortable.
The only concern, does each shox last in the same time ? if not, it will cause instability when wearing it.

JDoubleU posted this at 1:44 AM - January 30, 2004

Wassup yall!!

Another great review Prof. K!!!

Here's my 2 cents on the AZG's...

---I liked the DESIGN of the AZG the first time I saw the thing. If LeBron likes it, then I like it. He made some modifications to HIS shoe. We all tend to forget what a SIG shoe means. A SIG shoe is supposed to refelect what that player wants or desires in a shoe. If yall got some extra time, go to NIKEBASKETBALL.com & check out the AZG section. You should look at the first AZG samples compared to the final version. The changes were made by Lebron because it's HIS shoe with HIS name on it.

Vince Carter and Tracy McGrady are both too overhyped. VC got injured again and he doesn't even endorse the VCIII (which I prefer over the T-Mac III). McGrady's having a horrible season. He has some balls to release a playoff version of his shoe when he started 2-19. I'm sticking with Jordans and Posite-based shoes. I own the Pureposites now and plan to get some other Posites for the summer.
Oh yeah, this log is about LeBron's shoe. They're okay, but I don't see the "old-school feel" that others do. If they release them, I might get the Black/White colorway before the Olympic 7's come out in August.

Hugh G. Rection posted this at 1:53 PM - January 30, 2004

You know whats madd comfy? worn in Ultraflights without laces.

I thought these shoes were hideous when i first saw them, but they grew on me. They don't look super high-tech like the Ultraposites, but look good in an old-fashioned way. Think of the Ultraflights as the new Corvette C6 and the AZGs as a classic Corvette Stingray LS-5 from 1970. This is the same ageless appeal that keeps the Air Force 1's sellin.

Prof K
Do you know if the Nike Air Zoom Flight 5 as worn by Jason Kidd a few years back is ever going to get a re-release. I'd say other than the Nike Shox VC, the 5 was the best shoe I've ever worn. The Shox VC's are/were excellent, but the outer top keeps tearing.
Great site, and my ballin' pals here in the UK constantly check this out.
Rob aka Slow Motion

Prof. K posted this at 2:37 AM - January 31, 2004

Hey ROB, it actually was re-released here in the U.S. and Japan last year, but only in limited quantities. I have to admit, I slept on it, and now I regret it.

I think your only option nowadays is eBay, but even there, it's slim pickings.

If anyone out there knows of a source for the shoes I (and I'm sure ROB uk as well) would be much obliged.

Happily this review contained pictures I might actually want to save of a shoe thats actually worth reviewing. Theres no question about how this shoe stands up technologically and artistically today, but does it have what it takes to become a timeless classic like a certain other number 23's first shoe? I got several pairs of the LBJ zoom...to clarify, straight from the NIKE rep, it dismisses the HUMMER design. The shoe is suppose to represent LBJ's trials and triblation growing up on the streets and defeating the pressure of being a thug baller and making the wrong choices. It also represents LBJ growing up as a soldier, using the metallic blocks as sensors or an eyepiece in the video games that LBJ partakes in. In addition, it represents the animal instincts of being a lion (LBJ's trademark and in his posters), being quick on it's feet (paws) and being swift. The symbolic of LBJ's life. This is a great start of LBJ career. Good luck!

I just saw (in Adidas store) the new TMac 3 in blue (glossy) and also in red (glossy). They look much better than the black or white version, just like TMac 2's latest edition.
The material used in this new colorway will provide more ankle support than the original (white or black) as it is stiffer.
They are sold for the same price as the original.
They are hot !

Listen to this y'all...

So I go to school one day and, as usual, it sucked. I keep thinking about how I would love to play in that scrimmage tonight for my AAU team and how we were going to be really good this year, and my day got a little better. So the day goes on and I come home, and my mom said, "Hey, go to your room and look what's on your bed." So I think its prolly some clothes I forgot to put away and I go up and on my bed is the pair of shoes I wanted for the longest time, the Air Zoom Generations! I think I had the biggest vertical leap ever when I jumped for joy. These shoes are plain sick, I love them!

Prof. K posted this at 9:31 PM - February 03, 2004

Hey Ko, that's a great story, congrats on the shoes!!!

And make sure you thank your mom. I remember my mom doing stuff like that for me when I was young. She busted her ass to get me the things I wanted and most of the time I wasn't nearly grateful enough.

I'm being completely serious when I say my mom is the most incredible, most inspiring person I know. MJ is a distant second. ;-)

My local FootAction store still had the AZG in wht/red. Surprizingly, those didn't sell out. The 1st Games & wht/blk/red
sneaks were gone by the weekends. It's weird with the outsole. Flat and the traction looked weak. The profile of the shoes, like the jordan 18s, are nice. HOWEVER, try looking at your own foot. The Jordan's look like duck beaks and the AZG look like water paddles. If other people admire your shoes, you should have the common courtesey to enjoy looking at your own shoes from your own eyes. Just opinions...
