Prof. K Goes One-on-One with Chris Grosse and Pete Kreidlmayer of k1x

Chris Grosse, the founder and CEO of Kickz and k1x, and Pete Kreidlmayer, lead designer at k1x, provide their insights on the athletic shoe industry and footwear design along with a behind the scenes look at the making of the Chiefglider in our latest One-on-One interview!

The piece also includes pics of the soon to be released (and very hot) limited edition Chiefglider Rucker series along with a look at the low-top version of the shoe.

If you have an interest in the athletic shoe industry or shoe design definitely take a look. Oh, and Chris does not pull any punches in his responses -- there's some good stuff in there.

awesome interview as always, prof. K. I respect k1x's approach to the industry by trying their best not to be fake and to value quality over quantity. this kind of attitude will certainly bring them sucess. as for me, i'm not really feelin the oldie style of the chiefglider, but i'll keep an eye out for k1x..

Prof, post more photos of the Lows, and be sure to quickly review any new k1x products. Top priority ;)

GREAT interview, Prof. K. It really provides the insights as to the design and overall brand philosophy of k1x and its products. I have yet to try on a pair of the Chiefgliders but sooner or later I will.

However, from my personal perspective, I think while the sculptured white midesole/colored outsole provides that classic look that has drawn millions to purchase Adidas and Puma products ( I personally LOVE that combination), their design for the upper IS kinda blend and overly subdue. It's nice they introduce exciting colorways with TONS of details that really make the shoe stand out, I just think they need to make the upper more exciting while remaining performance driven.

I'm not saying they should just introduce a whole new shoe or have a revolutionary design, they do have a very solid design, but even with the subtle changes they've made, the shoe is still....not very exciting. So maybe they can adopt an automotive approach in that they can constantly tweak how the shoe looks, but after a certain amount of time, a significant design change has to take place if they wish to continue push this 1 great product (ala the "evolutionary" approach of the T-Mac's).

That's not saying they should add a lot of bells and whistles (ala JB) to the product to make it technologically exciting, but I think they should refine the overall shape of the shoes as well as some of the details of the shoe (my personal preference would be for them to streamline the overall shape of the shoes, reconsider if they need the overly busy panels and lines on the upper, and think about rearranging the size as well as the location of the k1x logo- to me, the overly busy lines kinda take away the very good looking k1x logo, which kinda just quietly sits in the corner like it's getting punished or something like that).

Also, if I remember correctly, the Chiefglider got 4/5 from Prof. K, so there is obviously room for improvement so it's up to their R&D people to continue making the shoe as good as it can possibly get. Again, I think this shoe has a lot of potential but it is seriously lacking in some areas and once they are addressed, I think Chiefglider will be an instant hit.

Ffm posted this at 8:25 AM - July 15, 2003

great interview, great picks of some of the new colorways of the chieglider!
oh and justin, if you are so into design then go buy dada or reebok shoes, but the chiefglider is a PERFORMANCE shoe. i'd put if up on the same level as my kobes or t-macs. and i dont know why you are critisizing the design of the shoe, i think a lot of people like it, i sure do.
peace

Prof. K posted this at 8:32 AM - July 15, 2003

Hey justin, great, thoughtful comment, thanks for adding it!

Speaking of tweaking the shoe, the folks at k1x have actually introduced some minor changes to the Mid and the soon-to-be-released Low. For one, indoor traction is said to be improved and the toe-box has been lowered a bit (one of my criticisms was that I thought the toebox was too roomy vertically).

So they are actually continuing to quietly improve the Chiefglider. Look out for an update to my review soon to see if those changes have a positive impact on performance.

Wzr posted this at 8:35 AM - July 15, 2003

I see, Prof, that you're getting more and more important in the industry - thought about helping some companies in designing?

'Trix posted this at 8:36 AM - July 15, 2003

Yo prof, just curious, what time did yall make this interview? I'm diggin those orange ones and the baby blue. Are they coming to canada?

'Trix posted this at 8:40 AM - July 15, 2003

prof, you got another job beside this one?

Black posted this at 9:21 AM - July 15, 2003

Wow, I didn't like the cheifgliders at first but those new colourways are HOT.

Awesome feature Prof. I haven't seen any k1x's in Canada though... do they sell those here?

Prof. K posted this at 9:35 AM - July 15, 2003

Yeah, I run security for Gary Coleman. He's not much in demand any more, though (there are only so many parents who can afford the likes of GC for their kids' mitzvahs), so I have a lot of down time.

This is all on the QT, so if you ask him about it he'll deny it.

On whether they're coming to Canada, I know that Kickz ships everywhere, so you'll be able to buy them, but you may take a nasty hit on shipping. Try emailing them at info@kickz.com to see if you can piggyback on the reduced shipping rates available to folks here in the U.S. via the new kickz.us site.

The Wzr, that's flattering, but I'm still a small fish in a big pond. ;-)

Shotcaller posted this at 10:01 AM - July 15, 2003

Professor - Props on Gary Coleman joke.

These shoes are pretty tight, I'm liking these new colorways. I look forward to seeing what they bring in the future. I have not tried on a pair of these yet, but I definitely will when I get the chance.

Prof. K posted this at 10:05 AM - July 15, 2003

What joke?

Ryan Holler posted this at 10:06 AM - July 15, 2003

Even if the k1x performs that well (and I'm surprised that it does), I feel that, whith the old school midsole/outsole, it'll be hard for them to establish the brand as a serious ballin' shoe in the US. It's cool to hear the great performance-related feedback about it, but the shoe just looks like a sneaker made for profilin'.

I also agree with Justin that they need more imagination in the design of the upper. I'm an artist, and approach kicks from an aesthetic angle first. It's my opinion that a shoe that has artful curves in it's design (e.g. Air Jordans IV thru XIII, and And1) is more pleasing to the eye that one with a bunch of straight lines (e.g. Avia, AJ XV).

However, a positive note is that the guys at k1x more than accomplished their objectives with their first shoe. Even they admitted that the feedback on the performance of the shoe has actually been a surprise. So, congratulations, and keep workin' guys. You're living a dream of many.

steepp posted this at 10:14 AM - July 15, 2003

props to kickz. they're ballers who run a company, not some what's-the-best-way-to-take-advantage-of-those-ballers?-types. they apparently love the game (i'm not saying people working for other companies don't, i just can't think of another ceo who does, though) and show that in their products.

@prof k.: you're not that small a fish anymore. when it comes to testing and assessing basketball shoes, you're without a doubt the most appreciated guy out there. and you definitely deserve it. i can't think of anyone else i'd trust in when buying b-ball kicks(after reading your reviews i normally don't feel like having to try on the shoes myself before buying them, expect in a few cases). apparently, i'm by far not the only one to think like that and i'm sure every serious manufacturer has taken notice of you. again, props for your tremendously good work. keep it up!

Ryan posted this at 10:26 AM - July 15, 2003

Hey Trix, I asked Prof K that same question a year or so ago. We'd been having a back and forth e-mail discussion about kicks until I asked that question. He dropped me like my 8th grade girlfriend did when she caught me kissing her best friend (hey, she was cuter). Anyway, though the Professor is a bit of a mystery, I, being the savvy net-sleuth that I am, know who he is and what he does. And he ain't no punk. This very well-designed and executed web site didn't get here by accident.

Whatup professor? Love to Gary.

PB posted this at 10:32 AM - July 15, 2003

Great interview, but how can they criticize players for wearing suits for post-game press?

Also, who tried to make MJ look bad at the ASG? And what exactly did they do? I know he's not hating on KG for PLAYING WELL enough to get the MVP! I thought MJ got PLENTY of respect in his final ASG appearance.

PEACE

Sans posted this at 10:46 AM - July 15, 2003

Gary Coleman, man you were serious? At my Bar mitzvah it was just a bunch of my aunts and #@&*, plus I got criticized for wearing black Chucks instead of fancy ass dress shoes.
You don't seem like the typical security guy though (saw you on the jumpan23 site) but aight.
THe k1x looks interesting, but I would admit that I would probably wear it when I'm sittin back more then ballin, just look more like a casual shoe to me. Keep the reviews coming (I got no love from footlocker when I tried bending the playof Iversons.)

Wzr posted this at 10:56 AM - July 15, 2003

Hey, "Small fish in a big pond" :D, there are several links to your site - like on adidas.com or k1x.com . I guess a lot of people were "saved" from buying shoes like I3 Playoffs II...

BTW, reviewing shoes is hell of a job i would LOVE to have.

Ryan posted this at 11:37 AM - July 15, 2003

Ah, bending the I3 Playoffs... I got a funny story. Just like you, Sans, I was in a Just For Feet store in Little Rock, saw that shoe, and tried to bend it in the middle until I realized they'd stuffed it with styrofoam. The sales guy just shook his head and said "Man, you must'a seen that web site. They killin' this shoe. Everybody be tryin' to bend that thing."

O/C posted this at 12:08 PM - July 15, 2003

Sheesh, you'd think if Prof K was that paranoid about his identity he wouldn't let it be published in USA Today. Still, keeping it low profile and off this site probably helps keep the nutcase count to a minimum.

Back on topic, Prof, any idea if the Rucker version of the Chiefglider will have those changes?

PB posted this at 12:20 PM - July 15, 2003

Wow. Just For Feet still exists? I thought they were completely extinct; there are no more in Cincinnati or Columbus (Ohio). I never really liked shopping there, anyway.

Keep on roll'n Prof .K, this was very enjoyable. Personally, I can't get into the old-school hoop shoe, but thats just me. Much love, as always, to all of your hard work & what it does for aspiring shoe designers like myself. Once I get my foot in the door, I'll give ya whatever shoe exclusive that you want my man.

I was checking out www.NIKEBASKETBALL.com & noticed the new BATTLEGROUND TOURNAMENT is set. Does anyone know if NIKE is releasing any special BATTLEGROUND COLORWAYS for any of the previously released Nike shoes ( Ultraflights, Ultraposites, Zoom2k3, Shox Supremecy, VC II, etc)???

Eddie G posted this at 2:45 PM - July 15, 2003

JD posted this at 3:20 PM - July 15, 2003

Hey PB, there is actualy one JUst for feet left in colombus, I was curious cause I have some fond memories of going there as a kid (I got my first basketball kicks there).
As I look back now the place really sucks and has gone way down hill

Prof. K posted this at 3:39 PM - July 15, 2003

To O/C, yes, the shoes in the Rucker series incorporate the aforementioned changes.

As for the interview, I'm really glad to hear that y'all like it, but don't thank me, thank the guys at k1x for being so open with their responses.

To JDoubleU, I'm not really sure what Nike is doing with the Battleground Collection this year. Since the tournaments have already started and we haven't heard anything about shoes there's a chance there won't be any new footwear at all, just apparel. I'll definitely keep an eye out for anything new.

Chris Grosse posted this at 3:56 PM - July 15, 2003

I cannot believe how much attention this interview and the Chiefgliders receive, this is really great stuff for us fighting our way into the limelight. I would like to comment on some of the posts so far and thank everybody who likes the shoe and loves what we do.

Justin: thanx for every remark, we are very happy with the overall design. The expensive leather works very well with this reduced design. I personally think that it is one of the strengths of our logo, that it still works well if you put it really small on the shoe. Actually one still can read from quite a distance. On our first prototypes we had it even smaller, but on this very soft full grain leather you cannot really get embroideries done neatly if you make them too small.

Also, for sure we will do more styles 2004. Also as the professor already wrote, we made two performance changes: We lowered the toe-box which also looks better I think and we put more sticky black outsoles on all the mid-cuts. Black rubber always has much better traction than e.g. white rubber. These changes are in effect in all the new styles which drop August first, so in all Rucker edition shoes.

Trix and Black: sure we ship to Canada, send me an email and I will take care of you. info@kickz.com. The orange ones didn’t make it into production, we just made some player samples size 13 and 14...

Ryan Holler: the shoes look “low-tech” compared to some other shoes, this is the design, but the more sporty colorways like the white / grey / black “Rucker” look great on-court. This shoe is played by all the best shoes in the Rucker league, since we received some early pairs and gave them out. The players love the shoe, I received great feedback. In addition, visiting the tournament personally, my hopes where confirmed that the shoe look fantastic on great athletes. Regarding your comments on the edgy lines of the shoe. Peter and I are from the Nation of Hoop, and since this "Nation" does not have its own territory yet, we are presently based in Europe, so of course you find a good piece of euro-style in our shoe.

PB: This is the same answer, being from a country close to Italy, it hurts my eyes when I see Kobe in suits which were out of fashion already back in 1990. But of course this is a very private comment; with the game he has, he can wear whatever he likes. (just maybe he should work at least on a bigger knot in his tie...) and of course I didn’t mean KG, I was talking about the Philly game.

Ryan: I did the same thing in a Footlocker in New York, the guy already knew that I wanted to bend it as soon as I picked it up and said: “please no bending!”

QC: all the new styles have that changes, except that the all-white low-cut does sport a white outsole, which traction is not as good as the one of the dark ones we use for the other 4 new colorways.

PB and LD: I don’t know where you guys are from, but in the US we will only be available in stores in NYC. We have not enough shoes to cover all the states, but you are welcome to order from our new site www.kickz.us after August 1st.

Prof K: thanx again for giving us the space and putting all this together.

And I thank everybody who goes out there with an open mind checking out our brand. It for sure takes more guts than buying another pair of Nikes, but I promise everybody you will feet that we have put our heart and soul into the Chiefglider.

Sans posted this at 4:18 PM - July 15, 2003

I'm picturing some wicked colorways in my head that would be sweet for those who collect shoes. Picture this yall....

Chrome(real Chrome)/silver ULTRAFLIGHTs!!!

How about a Navy Blue paten leather/Columbia Blue VCII???

or even a Metallic Gold/Black Zoom 2k3?!?!?!

....just to name a few ideas.

Nike would have to be totally crazy not to release some earth shattering colorways during this BATTLEGROUND series. I'm on the Nike mailing list, so I guess they would let me know if anything drops.

gotta respect the fellas at kix. a fresh approach to the biz. they know what they are - and what they aren't - and they're going to painful lengths to be different. as long as they stay away from droppin' an ipo they'll be fine. if you can make a living doing what you love by only selling a couple of hundred thousand pairs a year, i say go for it.

personally, i'm not feelin' anything they're doing. call me a superficial brand-whore, but if i'm buying a car that performs like a ferrari, then i want it to look the part. but based on how they've been recieved thus far, it looks like there's a market for their stuff. power to 'em.

finally got a peep at your mug, peekay. how did brand jordan contact you? being one of the '18on18' musta' been a highlight of your short, but wildly successful career as the world's foremost shoe-guru. you're as well spoken as you are written.

quick q for ya': in the interview, you're wearing the jordan jumpman classic knit top. i ordered the same one from eastbay.com. i'm a pretty lanky guy and even though the arms are the perfect length, the torso hangs waaaaaay down there. i feel like i'm in a brand jordan cheerleader outfit. is it the same fit for you?

btw, you're a man in an enviable position - and you're doing a stellar job. you deserve every syllable of praise being thrown your way. keep it up.

Its either them or the promodels and the chiefgliders got a better score so ill prob go with them if i can get in in time 2 buy them.

If the white/orange's came into production, I would buy a couple pairs! So all the Chiefgliders come with stickers to put your jersey # on your shoe? That's a great idea if thats true... Congradulations to Chris Grosse for starting something so big! Mr. Grosse, is it possible to ship the Rucker colorways to Canada, or just the regular ones? I'm really liking both the Shamrocks and the Sundevils! Any hints or info on future colorways? :-)

Chris Grosse posted this at 6:59 PM - July 15, 2003

sorry Sans, don't take it personal, you made me laugh however by letting us know that your local footlocker does not like the bending thing either. ....
But hey, the Chiefglider is a great shoe also off-court. (actually I have been wearing solely Chiefgliders 24 / 7 for 10 months now. (including christmas eve, guess how much my parents liked that, but I still think the black / patent goes good with a dark suit...)

David: where are you from? We have a warehouse in Europe and one in the US, so which ever is closer we will ship to your doorstep. drop a mail to info@kickz.com.

KeonClark7: is this your real name? :-) The stickerpack is not included with the Rucker versions, since they already have plenty of stuff on them. Also the all white low to do not have them, since they are supposed to look completely white. So only the white / carolina mid-cut has them. (carolina-blue stickers). And for sure we ship them all to Canada. new colorways? we didn't fully decide them yet, but white / orange we didn't do. We have another white / red / orange low top we consider, but there are so many possibilities... we come up with new colorways every day. (guess how much our sample-maker likes us...)

Anonymous: the shoes will be sold in selected Footlockers in Europe and should be sold in selected Footactions in the NYC area, but this is not confirmed yet, since we offered them the shoes very late in the season.

Ryan posted this at 7:27 PM - July 15, 2003

Ma parents don't really dig me buyin shoes every month when I only got 2 feet. (hey I'ma still in high schoooll....hahah maybe in 2 or 3 yrs..) Some more colorways to suggest, how about doing some all white or all black stuff with the kix logo at the front highlighted in baby blue, red, or orange? I can already imagine how it looks. But then again, if yall actually made all the colorways you can think of, k1x would cover the entire footlocker racks. (and how much bling bling would it cost to make all those?) Ever thought of making a k1x store(kinda like nike store) later on? And WC10 is right, the lows do sorta look like skating shoes, but I really like how the lows look. (I like the lows better, but the mids got better colors) Then again, my masterpiece lows (thanks again Prof for introducing me to this work of art) are my favourite shoes and they look more like causals. So keep em coming, I wouldn't mind if all your bball shoes had a theme of 'skating on it! Its a twist from all the normal stuff we get, and then we can kick it out on stuff besides basketball too. (Imagine wearing hyperflights or ultraflights with jeans...)

The only thing stopping me from coppin' these kicks are the August 1st release date and that shipping and tax is gonna rape me coming from Germany when I want to buy 2 or 3 pairs.

Much love goes to Prof K. who's got just about everything on lock down. The Cheifgliders are the hottest thing right now, you got no taste if you can tell me The Rucker Edition isn't hotter than any AF1 or Reebok Amaze PLUS PERFORMANCE. I can't wait to rock a pair.

You guys are the #@&* bottom line. One last question: Which way can you direct a young shoe and apparel designer to make his way and own path, educationally and experience wise. I would prefer if you just sent you answer straight to my email address at hillen@rock.com

Thanx for your time Chris, Pete and always much respect to the man of the house Prof K.

Hey Chris and Pete or Prof K. The Sundevil Chiefgliders are off da hook. I'm wondering if any of the rucker shoes come with a DVD like the regular Chiefgliders. Much Props

Chris Grosse posted this at 7:19 AM - July 19, 2003

Hey Canadian Mint,
I don't know exactly how complicated it is to ship shoes from the US to Canada, but I think the NAFTA thing takes care of that and makes these things quite easy. I think on Tuesday we already put them on the www.kickz.us website.
Pete should answer you the part of the education, he can tell you what he did.

Baldy,
actually they don't come with the DVD, but I am happy to send you one if you buy a pair. Just let me know when you order it.

And thanx Cula, I hope you become a new ambassador for us.

Dj posted this at 2:21 PM - July 23, 2003

Chris, can you describe the colorways?

schwank posted this at 12:06 PM - July 24, 2003

I am a sneaker fiend and lately untill reciently i have been a little bored with alot of the designes in the industry. so i had been lookgin for some smaller more exclusive brands like diadora and k1x. I really like k1x becouse of thier passion its the same love i have for basketball and shoes.

If you say your a true sneaker fan and you go out and buy the new superstars and the reebok playoffs from ai's line your no sneaker lover reall and true fanatics what the ones no one elsae has not the ones that every one has. Its liek you wanna get them befor everyone else does. you should want the color no one else has. you should want the #@&*in wierd ass, only 200 pairs made, ones from china. Do you get me?

schwank

Chris Grosse posted this at 2:44 AM - July 25, 2003

Dj, no the colorways are still a secret. Also we are working on some spring 2004 styles. What colorways would be your favorites?

c

and love to you schwank. from our Rucker series, out of the 1500 we made per colorway, only 400 pairs made it to the US. So if you buy a pair, you have something very exclusive.

Dj posted this at 4:11 PM - July 25, 2003

i think a gray or navy blue colorway would be tight. but whatever colors yall come up with, i'm sure will look great

I'm thinking about getting the Sundevil or the Shamrocks edition!!
Anyone has any suggestions? Does anyone know which one of those looks better in person?
Thanks

Chris Grosse posted this at 4:18 AM - July 29, 2003

Nick, the thonx will be about 16 usd.
L.P., I have them both...

L.P. posted this at 1:52 PM - July 29, 2003

I would have em both if I could get em for free like you Chris. But I already ordered the Shamrocks and plan to get the Sundevil also when I get my next paycheck.
How come it takes too long to verify my card #, I ordered on Sunday, today's Tuesday I still got no email to verify my card #. Hope I did enter the correct #.

Jerome posted this at 2:56 PM - August 05, 2003

I think kicksology should have a partner site with k1x- k1xology. You could sell Ko gear along with with the chiefgliders. Just a thought.

Jerome, thats a good idea they go perfect together

Matt posted this at 10:01 PM - August 17, 2003

The k1x chiefgliders are sick, especially in the newer colorways.
I find that shoes with the old school look do not perform as well on court as others. How do you combine the somewhat old school look with the performance and where can I get a pair somewhere else than www.kickz.com?

Christian posted this at 9:26 AM - August 18, 2003

The k1x chiefgliders are awesome! I love the old school look with the new school style!
Great job with this site, I always check out shoes here before I buy them. Thanks!

I'm feeling the Carolina Blue colorway, but when I go to the site, it's in German. Am I missing something? Someone help please.

Christian Grosse posted this at 5:41 PM - September 29, 2003

Hey Matt:
the Chiefglider has all the technology build in. We put the shank and the cusioning elements in the midsole to keep the classic look. The shank you can see from the side and from the bottom and the dampening system shines thru the "Brennsohle" (I don't know the English word), you can see a blue shine if you take out the sockliner. Also invisible is the memory foam at the colar. A big thing is the weight. To make technology visible other manufacturers have to use a lot of heavy plastic. Just check all the weights of the shoes on kicksology, you will see that the technology overload brings a lot of extra weight. I personally hate heavy shoes, so after we were finished with the shoe, we spent another 3 months to cut out some weight. (you know German engineering, we love stuff like that ;-)) Together with the best and most expensive leathers and other components, and the snug fit, I think we made a great and very light shoe.

Christian: thanx!

Armin:
the Sundevils is actually the best selling shoe. A lot of streetballers play in low-tops these days. the Sundevils will last a while.

Sleeky Slee:
I will send you stickers, just drop me a mail: grosse@kickz.com

Paul:
go to kickz.us, this is where we ship the stuff from the U.S.. But on kickz.com you can switch to English if you hit the American flag at the top of the site.

sorry guys that I didn't check this forum for a while...

thanx for the support for our K1X brand!

and I was wondering if there is another site or place that you could tell me of that sells this colorway of Chiefgliders?
